Emely graduated from high school in 2020 specializing in nursing, but because she did not have the funds to attend university, she has been trying to save to be able to register. She earns money by selling products that she has woven herself. Emely is taking a computer course this year to improve her technology skills and become a volunteer at Xela Aid.
At the Mariano Galvez University, located in Quetzaltenango, Emely wants to continue to studying nursing at the higher level. The first part of the degree lasts three years, with classes every morning followed by internships before full qualification. She has wanted to be a nurse since she was a little girl and enjoys the prospect of helping others in her community especially when they need medical care, since many do not have access to skilled practitioners in the region.
In her free time, she likes to read, review past lessons, and research new nursing topics that catch her attention. She found virtual teaching difficult in 2021 and medical internships were not available to students during covid. The prospect of in person classes and workshops in nursing in 2023 are exciting opportunities for her to advance in her chosen career.
