Jenifer is six years old (birthday in June), and attends kindergarten in the village of El Rincon, San Martin Sacatepequez. She is an only child and lives in her paternal grandparents’ house nearby. 15 people live there. Her grandfather is the only person with a regular job working in the fields, where he grows his own vegetables to sell. Her father also lives in the house and is an agricultural worker, but he does not have a permanent job.
Jenifer has been diagnosed as having Down’s syndrome and is part of Xela Aid’s special needs program where she receives specialized teaching and care. She finds it difficult to do her homework, but she is a keen student and wants to study. Help for children with her condition is relatively rare in rural Guatemala. Her mother would love for her to become a special needs teacher eventually and help others who are dealing with difficulties like hers. She cannot speak yet, but she loves to play and have fun with her cousins in the kitchen.
