1. Nov. 4 – After arriving in Guatemala around 7 AM, we will head to the magnificent Colonial City of Antigua, founded in the 16th century. While our luggage is being offloaded at our comfortable hotel conveniently located near Parque Central, we will enjoy a hosted breakfast at one of Antigua’s most notable eateries. Artists will then take advantage of morning light and the exquisite scenery of Antigua to photograph and paint. Those wishing to explore the city may take in a jade or chocolate museum or shop at any one of a selection of fine stores. That night we’ll visit stunning museums and enjoy a hosted dinner at the world renown 16th century ruin, the Santa Domingo Monastery.
2. Nov. 5 - After your delicious hosted breakfast, artists may once again take advantage of the morning light. At approximately 11 AM, we will leave for Quetzaltenango (“Xela”) in the Guatemalan highlands. We will stop for lunch at a well-known traditional eatery, and take stops along the way as needed before arriving in the late afternoon and checking into our comfortable accommodations located right at town center in one of the most paintable locations in the region!
During our stay in Xela, all breakfasts and lunches are hosted and an optional group dinner will be arranged for each evening showcasing the various cuisine has to offer.
3. Nov. 6 – Xela is alive with color, culture, texture and tradition. After meeting for our breakfast, we’ll spend our first full day there photographing and painting, including in the central park, Parque Central, featuring a 16th century church
4-6. Nov 7-9 – After an early breakfast, we’ll set out for the village of San Martín Chiquito nestled at 8500 amidst rolling hills and cornfields. During our three days in this village where the local language is Mám-Maya, we will enjoy the comforts of the headquarters of our partner Xela AID, a community development organization. We will combine painting and service projects, working side by side with the people of the region who will also serve models during painting session! Participants will meet local artists sponsored by Art Ambassador who, with their intimate knowledge of the area, will lead photo and painting tours to places off the beaten path. Each day we’ll enjoy a homemade, hosted, authentic Mayan meal prepared and served by women who’ve completed chef training. Participants will also receive a back-strap weaving demonstration, and will have the opportunity to take lessons in the ancient art, as well as participate in a Mayan cooking class that includes a trip to a local market (weaving and cooking lesson carries a nominal additional cost). Participants in the weaving class will keep their authentic backstrap loom!
At Lake Atitlan, delicious, homemade breakfasts and lunches are available daily, no-host, while your multi-course dinners are included each evening!
7-8. Nov 10, 11 – We will leave especially early this morning to get to Panajachel, the reknown marketplace at Lake Atitlan, to tour, photograph and paint (if time permits). We will take private launches to our stunning accommodation, chalets perched on the edge of an ancient volcano caldera nestled amidst tropical gardens! During our stay at the Lake, artists will paint to their heart’s delight while all may choose to Kayak, or take a hike to the 16th Century church at Santa Cruz, including stunning vistas perfect to photograph and paint! Those who wish may take an optional excursion to meet Mariano Chabajay, one of Guatemala’s most famous artists, at his studio-home in San Pedro de Laguna (dependent on artist’s schedule). On our last night, we will enjoy a farewell dinner and celebration, and afterwards, those who wish may take advantage of a fire-heated hot tub with views of the Lake against a backdrop of stars!
9. Nov 12 – Enjoy a last delicious breakfast then retreat to the grounds to capture photographs or paint in the spectacular gardens and morning light against the backdrop of soaring twin volcanoes. Sometime mid-morning we will make our way by launch to Panajachel where you can continue photographing or pursue last-minute deals for woven and other local art from the four corners of Guatemala. After a leisurely lunch on your own, we’ll head for Guatemala City. You’ll take with you memories and new friendships sure to last a lifetime!
